You know what? I hope this opens up diplomatic avenues. Because I'm willing to believe it was unintentional. What would be better in the long run: a dialogue between nations to stop this from happening again by recognizing that we're worse off with this useless violence, or an act of retribution?

Dafuq? Even though I don’t condone what Dolt 45 did, I just can’t bring myself to trust everything Iran says.

Trust no-one. However, if they are happy to take the fall for it so you don't then GREAT! But still don't trust them...

Sorry for treading into PERLATIKS, but I agree with this take. Whether by accident, or intentionally and then forced to admit it (but lie about the intent because hey that’s what all countries do... ), Iran has now lost their “ victim”   leverage by killing citizens.

Here’s the problem though... All those people would be alive today if America didn’t decide to snipe some general...

Additionally, it joins a too long list of civilian airliners that have been mistakenly shot down in the last 50 or so years.

This is huge news, as the admission is coming from President Rouhani, and he’s pointing the finger at the Revolutionary Guard.

Shit in Iran is about to get weird.

I am willing to believe it is unintentional too, because it is somewhat extraordinary for them to admit something like that, and it doesn’t make any sense for them to ta rget a Ukrainian plane full of Iranian citizens.  Very sorry for the lives lost and all involved.  Hope it can lead to some more rational discussions, not an expert on this stuff, but not holding my breath hoping it will work out that way either.

And that General would still be alive today if he hadn’t been attacking US forces and civilian targets for the better part of two decades.

It wouldn’t take much of a stretch of imagination for some other country to have decided, say 15 years ago, that Dick Cheney was a war criminal who clearly was never going to be brought to justice, and that using a drone to take him out was justified.

Can you imagine what we would have done in response?

Assassinations, regardless of the justification, are perilous acts.

I think Tylers piece says is best

“If indeed Iran shot the plane down as it is increasingly believed, they are directly responsible for such a terrible miscalculation, but it didn’t happen on some random Tuesday morning. It happened during the highest point of tension between the two countries in decades. It may be quite inconvenient for some people to come to terms with the fact that this occurred, at least indirectly, because the U.S. and Iran cannot figure out a way forward that doesn’t include being on the brink of war with one another periodically.

The fact is that when the geopolitical situation is allowed to degrade to such a perilous point, the chances that major mistakes may occur skyrockets. And those mistakes can have huge impacts on countries and people who are not even involved with the ongoing crisis. The whole thing should serve as a powerful warning of the cost brinksmanship and how even limited conflict can spill into unintended areas, resulting in highly unfortunate consequences.”
